Calling for Artist Submissions!

The Norfolk Library Foundation is calling for submissions from artists for a three-dimensional, hanging art piece at the Norfolk Public Library. The artist must have some connection to northeast Nebraska but current residency is not required.

Submissions are due on February 24.

Complete details and applications can be found here.

Project Scope: The Norfolk Library Foundation is seeking hanging, three-dimensional artwork. The work will hang from the beams in the library’s atrium. The composition of the work may be of any material of the artist’s choosing, but must be lightweight and be able to be suspended from the atrium beams by conventional hanging methods (i.e. cable, wire, etc.). Submissions can include a single piece or several pieces that interplay to create one work of art.

Criteria for Artist Selection:

  • All work must be original.
  • The work should honor the library’s slogan of “Enrichment. Right at home.” The work should evoke the feeling of flight or a “flight of fancy” and should celebrate the treasured escape that reading can provide.
  • The work must be able to be completed and delivered to the library within a time frame agreed upon by both parties, and not more than 6 months from the date the artist is notified of selection.
  • The artist must have a connection to northeast Nebraska. This could be current or prior residency, family history in the area, or other connections. Artists must include their connection to the community in the application form.
  • Artist must be able to provide instructions on the proper installation of the work and be on site during the installation process. Scheduling of installation will be coordinated with the artist at the appropriate time.
  • Artist must be able to attend a Public Dedication/Artist Reception and provide a brief presentation about the inspiration and creation of the work of art. Scheduling of this event will be coordinated with the artist at the appropriate time.

Stipend: The Norfolk Library Foundation will supply a stipend of $1,500 to the selected artist and up to $1,000 for supplies. The Norfolk Library Foundation realizes that this stipend may be well below the market value of the artwork created. However, we hope that the ability to have the work displayed in the library will add some value for the selected artist and that artists of all skill levels and experience will submit applications.

Process: All fully completed applications will be presented to the Norfolk Library Foundation for evaluation and selection. The Norfolk Library Foundation will select a design which they feel best suits the goal and scope of the project as outlined above. If no submission from the initial call to artists is selected, then a second call to artists will be issued. The selected work will become the property of the Norfolk Library Foundation.

Call to Artists!

The Norfolk Library Foundation is excited to announce a project to add local artwork to the Norfolk Public Library. The goal of the project is to beautify the public space of the library, to support local artists, and to celebrate the spirit of the Elkhorn Valley.

Wall art of any medium is sought for the project (i.e. painting, fabric, metal-work, etc.) and the finished work will be hung on a sheetrock wall inside the building by the Community Meeting Rooms. Submissions can include a single piece or several pieces that interplay to create one work of art. Submissions must be the original work of the artist, must in some way connect to the spirit or identity of the past or present Elkhorn Valley, must be able to be completed and delivered to the library within 3 months of selection, and the artist must be located within northeast Nebraska.

The Norfolk Library Foundation will supply a stipend of $1,500 to the selected artist. Funding for this project was raised during the recent Norfolk Area Big Give.

The application with complete details can be found at http://bit.ly/NPLfdnart. Completed submissions must be returned to the Norfolk Library Foundation by August 16. Please contact Jessica Chamberlain at 402-844-2100 or jchamberlain@norfolkne.gov with any questions.

The Big Give is May 24!

Just one week until the Norfolk Area Big Give!

The Norfolk Library Foundation is helping the Norfolk Public Library create a MakerSpace that will encourage community members to learn more about technology, programming, and coding through hands-on classes and lab time.  To begin, the MakerSpace will include a 3D printer, computer programming tools, and robotics kits.

The Library Foundation is matching every dollar donated, up to a $5,000 total, so your donation to the library’s MakerSpace will go twice as far!

Plus, the first three $100 donors will receive a dozen sticky buns compliments of Library Foundation Board Member Sue Burns!
